The Main Issues Facing the Country
The chart shows access to health care, drug addiction widely seen as “huge” problems facing the country
When asked to consider the top issues facing the country, healthcare affordability and drug addiction top the list of the American public.
New issues, including illegal immigration and climate change, are seen as less pressing, partly because of sharp partisan disagreements over the importance of those issues.
Two-thirds of Americans consider healthcare affordability a considerable problem in the country today, while another 26% say it is a medium problem. On the other hand, fewer than one in ten say that providing health care is a little problem (6%) or no problem (2%).
An even majority say drug addiction is a big problem: 64% say it’s a massive problem in the country, and 28% say it’s a medium problem.
Narrow majorities say higher education affordability (55%) and the federal budget deficit (53%) are significant difficulties in the country. Near half say this about climate change (48%).
